Climb the highest mountain nearby ... Grandfather Mountain is slightly over one hour away. Fantastic views, zoo, hiking, interpretive center, mile high suspended walking bridge.

     There are many ways to enjoy the rural beauty of Johnson County and the quaint town of Mountain City, Tennessee, along with Damascus, VA, and Boone, NC.

     A Cottage in the Woods is a freestanding, rental house which will sleep up to 7 persons. Bring your kids, dog, and friends. This is your home away from home.

    This casually-decorated, three bedroom, two bath house features a fully equipped kitchen, spacious living-dining combo, deck, picnic table under the trees, a one car garage and a very wooded, private location just eight miles north of Mountain City and nine miles to Trail Days in May in Damascus, VA.

    The cottage is available for rent on a daily basis, (2-day minimum) and may be rented for longer periods (discounts then apply). The cottage is 1300 sq .ft., fully furnished from linens to pots and pans, TV, VCR and gas-fired stove, as well as central heat. Some bedrooms have air conditioning, although given the mountain weather, it is e rarely needed.

    The location is ideal:  An easy drive of about 28 miles to Bristol Motor Speedway and only 9 miles to the Virginia Creeper Trail. It is north of Mountain City, TN, off Hwy. 91--now less than 7 miles with the new Hwy.91 bypass. It is 2 miles off the main route between Damascus and Abingdon, VA. Greyson Highlands State Park is a fabulous location for scenery (and finding the miniature horses--bring apples!)

Policies

    Deposit required; full payment required if booked within 3 weeks of use. Two-day minimum rental in all cases; three-day minimum for some weekends. Your pet is welcome at this cottage ONLY. (Cannot host pets at the Inn.)

    This is a great, casual house with wood siding outside and comfortable furnishings (even original art) inside.

  Cost savings: Bring all your own food. Cook up a storm or snack a little. There are nice dining spots in Mountain City.

    This is the place to get away NOT the place to stay connected. It's not for everyone, just the few who appreciate the woods, the snows, the distance from maddening crowds, the time to turn off clocks and deadlines and the need to replace urgency with reconnection. Here is a place to share time with loved ones and a closeness to Nature.

Pets and children welcome.

    If you need wifi and cable television, please book a room at the inn where both are provided free of charge. .. iphones work perfectly at the cottage. Cabin renters may visit the inn to use the free wifi network. Wifi is also available at the Mountain City McDonald's and Hardees due to proximity to the local computer store which has a wifi network. (Hwy. 421/South Shady Street).

    Second bedroom --on first floor:  Double bed with custom wall mural of a picket fence covered with vines, which serves as a headboard. The first-floor location is adjacent to the first floor bath, which has a shower stall. Air conditioning unit in this room.

   Gather in the living-dining-kitchen area with a bay window overlooking the woods.  Lounge on the leather sofa, kick back, bring your favorite board game or grab the rocking chair and read a book.

   The television has both a VCR and DVD player but not commercial channels. The dinette table features teak chairs under a ceiling fan. The bay window frames a sunny view of the woods. A deck overlooks the front of the house.

    There's ample flat ground around the house to spread out next to the new picnic table. There are saucer-type sleds in the basement and old logging trails behind the house, leading up the Iron Mountain Trail (an Appalachian Trail-type route).  Watch for deer and other animals. We saw more than a dozen wild turkeys in the meadow just down the road this morning.

Twin bedroom (upstairs-2 beds)

    Third bedroom: Two twin beds are dressed in log cabin pattern quilts. This room is adjacent to the family bath with a tub-shower combo on the second floor. The leather sofa in the living room is also large enough to sleep one additional child.

Furnishings:  We provide all bed linens, towels, bar soap and basic condiments. Laundering of these items after your departure is included. Basic clean up by guests is expected.

      Kitchen:  Updated with all new appliances plus microwave and toaster oven. We provide all dishware, pots and pans, plus the basic paper and cleaning products. Basic condiments and coffee are included, too.

   Total capacity: 6-7 persons and one dog medium dog or two small dogs - bring crates if you plan to leave them "at home" while touring .

     Location:  Just minutes from Callelante All Terrain Park. Seven miles from the Virginia Creeper Trail and Appalachian Trail, in Damascus, Va.   Extra large parking adjacent to the cottage/house for multiple vehicles.

        The location, spaciousness, nature and woods, privacy, and lovely rooms will convince you to book your next family getaway right away.

   The cottage is about 10 minutes from the Striped Snake--Hwy. 421. The many curves are fast becoming popular with riders. Area backroads provide many more scenic opportunities to ride.

   Start your day with a hearty breakfast at the inn $8 per person plus tax. Not included in basic price; please phone the inn a day ahead to make a reservation. You must reserve by 4 pm the previous day. (No walk ins--we are not licensed as a restaurant and can only reserve registered guests.)
